A fresh day greeted both the teams as Hilversum2 (HIL2) arrived at Qui vive club to play their first game of this truncated season against Qui Vive CC 5 (QCC5). There was a bit of rain in the air, but we hoped it would stay away. Thankfully the rain gods were merciful, allowing a full day’s cricket to be played. The ground remained damp for long periods and a slightly thicker grass covering meant that ground shots would not fetch premium value.
Following a slightly delayed start, QCC5 won the toss and elected to bat first. A team brimming with bright new talent, a new opening pair – Kaushik and Venkat strode out to the crease. Both started cautiously with Venkat showing a bit more intent. Kaushik was the first to be dismissed, out LBW to HIL2’s Srinath with the team score on 4. Sriram joined Venkat and this pair built a steady partnership to take QCC5 to 41. Venkat unfortunately stepped on his stumps to cut a promising innings short at 19. Sriram held one end up while stitching together partnerships of 29 with Varun and then 11 with Ravi before he was dismissed for 23. The skipper Vinoth was soon dismissed leaving QCC5 at a dodgy 95/5 with more than half the overs remaining. Ravi then took over the sheet anchor role, he guided careful partnerships with Hari (15) and Babu to take the score past 150. He was 8th out, but not before completing a well deserved 50. The tail could not add much and QCC5 innings ended at 183 with 7 balls of the innings still remaining. However QCC5 felt this could still be a tough chase given the ground and weather conditions.
HIL2 skipper Shreyas bowled very well to take 2-24, he was well supported by Usama (2/15), Shiva and Srinath.
After a great lunch (Samosa + Dabeli, thanks to Ashish), Vinoth and the young pacer Pranav took the new ball. HIL2 openers Nirav and Tarun started off positively. At the score on 19, Nirav was caught well by Ravi at midwicket off Vinoth. Gopal replaced him at the crease. Both batters were subjected to some aggressive bowling from Vinoth and Varun while Ram maintained pressure from the other end. Eventually the pressure began to tell as Gopal was dismissed for 10 by Varun and Tarun was caught trying to slog Pranav. The HIL2 middle order succumbed as they slipped to 59/6 and then 79 all out. Pranav bowled well in both his spells to finish with 4-23 and was well supported by Ajit, Vinoth, Varun and Hari who each took 1 wicket.

QCC5 had 6 new-comers in the 11 and their performances augured well for the rest of the season. Some of the older members would feel relieved following a 100+ run win and hope performances this season can salve over some of the hurts from the previous ones.
